Local campaigner Mike Bell has welcomed the move by the Association of Train Operating Companies to push the Government to spend £500m on reopening new lines and improving rail services.

"Local residents often tell me that we need to see improvements to our rail links," said Mike. "Commuters tell me we need more regular services to Bristol and an increase in direct links to London.

"We need to see the dualing of the line through Weston's main station and for Weston's branch line to be added to the main south west line to allow greater access to services.

"Our current infrastructure is not fit for purpose. We need to invest in our national rail network to both develop jobs and to put in place the infrastructure needed for a long-term, green recovery programme.

"I will be asking the Association of Train Operating Companies to support a strong programme of improvements for Weston and add their backing to my campaign for better public transport in our town."
