C&G Branch to close?

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 9th Jun 2009

Lloyds Banking Group is to close all 164 branches of Cheltenham & Gloucester, risking up to 1,500 jobs, it is being reported.

Branches at risk include those in Walliscote Road in Weston-super-Mare and Threeways in Cheddar. Cheltenham & Gloucester also have branches locally in Wells and Bristol.

Mike Bell, Weston-super-Mare's Prospective Liberal Democrat MP said: "This is really worrying news for those working locally for Cheltenham & Gloucester. Given the state of the Lloyds finances, job losses are likely.

"I will be asking Lloyds Banking Group to do everything possible to protect jobs as part of any restructuring. The Government has responsibility too as they are now major shareholders in Lloyds as a result of massive financial support provided by the taxpayer to the banking sector.

"It is not in the taxpayers interest to see job losses on this scale."
