84% OF NORTH SOMERSET CRIMES GO UNSOLVED

The latest Home Office figures have confirmed that more than 80% of crimes reported in North Somerset go unsolved - making it the fifth worst police district in the country.

The statistics have been revealed to police forces as part of the latest round of Government performance indicators.

Woodspring's Liberal Democrat Prospective MP, Councillor Mike Bell, commented:

"For many years Avon & Somerset Police have had a relatively poor detection rate. It is disappointing that the North Somerset district has performed so poorly nationally.

"The fact is that all the arguments in the world about sentencing, punishment and ID cards count for nothing if we do not catch the criminals in the first place.

"If detection rates are to be improved we need more police on our streets, we need less red tape and paperwork, and we need investment in the latest technology.

"On all fronts the Government is failing to address the real need - particularly with regard to police numbers.

"If North Somerset had the national average number of police per head of population we would have nearly 500 officers - we've actually got 227.

"Instead of wasting billions on ID cards, the Government should make a real difference to local community safety - and give us more police."
