Lib Dems would win Woodspring Constituency if recent by-election results were repeated locally

The Liberal Democrats moved from third place to a close second in yesterday's Hartlepool by-election, cutting the majority of 17,000 to 2,000 with a swing of 19%. The Tories were pushed from second into fourth place by the Lib Dems and the UK Independence Party.

The result for the Conservatives was worse even than the third places they achieved in the previous three parliamentary by-elections in Brent East, Leicester South and Birmingham Hodge Hill.

A similar massive swing in Woodspring Constituency would see Tory Party Chairman Liam Fox in real trouble and the Lib Dems win by more than 5,000 votes.

Lib Dem prospective MP, Councillor Mike Bell, said: "The Tories have not just been overtaken, they have been left in the lay-by. It is the only time the Tories have gone from second to fourth since the Tory Party was formed.

"Labour voters are coming across to the Lib Dems in their thousands and the Tories are fast becoming irrelevant."
