North Somerset wants decision on the Euro

Commenting on Gordon Brown's statement on the Euro yesterday, Woodspring Constituency's Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesman, Councillor Mike Bell, said:

"There has been nothing but indecision from Labour on the euro since 1997. They have produced two assessments, three national changeover plans, eighteen studies covering 2000 pages, and endless spin. But there has been no action.

"In 1997, Gordon Brown said it was time to prepare and decide. Well we have had plenty of prepare, but precious little decide.

"Whatever the timing of actual membership of the Euro might be - and the Chancellor is right to say that we must ensure the conditions are right - it is high time this Government got off the fence and held a referendum on the principle of membership.

"People across North Somerset have differing opinions for and against the single currency, but the overwhelming view is that a referendum must be held now so that people can have their say.

"How can businesses in Clevedon, Nailsea and Portishead be expected to plan for the future when we simply don't know if we will be in the Euro or not?"
